Krátké zprávy a postřehy 13.1.2005

Our primary guide in 2002, Norwegian Steinar Rostad, wrote this report on the season:

This year we had a mobile camp in Qunneq and a stationary camp in Kangia. John and Domenic had the pleasure of experiencing the beautiful fish of Qunneq. The river runs between big stones that create natural obstacles for the Arctic Char whot fights it’s way upstream to spawn. It’s a very special thing to catch fish in a river. It makes you feel that you are the first flyfisherman to do so, and actually it is very few sport fishermen that have tried this river.

Equipment that works
Kangia is a catch and release river. Therefore each angler is only allowed one not barbed hook in the water. But I don't think I lost a single fish using the un-barbed hook. But I did lose a couple of fish when the snood snapped. I solved that problem with a 0.30 snood.

Your selection of flies should include leaded nymphs and flies you can skate on the surface. The colours vary from earth colours to "fireworks". A fly that proved itself quite a catch was "Aqua-Lene", pink chenille on a size 6 nymph hook. For the spinner enthusiast, small spinners and lures from Vibrax and M?resild catch well. The char did not seem particularly picky.

A hundred a day
There is an abundance of char in Kangia, but if you are out to make a really big catch it takes hard work in the deep pools. The average fish weighs 1.5 – 2 kg. But you could get lucky and pick a fight with a big one of up to 4 kg. Then you will appreciate a reliable break on your wheel. The char in Greenland is not likely to give you an easy fight. I battled one for more than ten minutes believing that it must weigh around 3 kg, but on the line was an out-and-out racer of 1.5 kg.
A day at Kangia is a guarantee for a catch. A hundred fish in one day is not unusual. This summer, I think around 200 fish in one day was the largest number. In some pools there were so many fish that the bottom seemed black, but once you got closer it moved, and what you thought were plants were fish, lots.

Wonderful weather and brilliant fish are two expressions that best describe this year's camp. The average size fish was 2 kg.
